BYU men’s basketball has a national TV schedule now. It also has a bedtime problem.

The Big 12 released its television assignments Tuesday, and 17 of BYU’s 18 conference games will appear on linear TV. Ten are scheduled for the ESPN family of networks. The rest of the league slate spreads across FS1, FOX, TNT and Peacock, with one game left for ESPN+ if it is not selected later.

That is the good part. Fans will rarely have to hunt for a conference game.

The price is hiding in the Mountain time column. BYU has an 8:30 p.m. home tip against Cincinnati, a 9 p.m. road start at Arizona and an 8 p.m. home rivalry game against Utah. A useful TV schedule has to do more than list channels. It should tell fans when national exposure starts taking a bite out of the next morning.

The confirmed BYU TV schedule

These times come from BYU’s Oct. 13 release and are listed in Mountain time. Network slashes mean the final channel remains subject to selection.

Linear TV is a real gain

Seventeen linear conference games is not a decorative press-release statistic. It changes how easy BYU is to find.

A fan with access to the listed cable or streaming bundle can move through the league schedule without treating every Saturday like a scavenger hunt. The Cougars have conference games on ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, FOX and TNT. Peacock gets the Colorado road game. ESPN’s own release confirms that BYU is one of five Big 12 teams in its preseason Top 25 and gives three Cougar league games firm ESPN assignments, with Oklahoma State at ESPN or ESPN2.

The three confirmed ESPN slots, plus one ESPN-or-ESPN2 assignment, are not filler:

  • Kansas at BYU on Jan. 9
  • BYU at Arizona on Jan. 12
  • Arizona at BYU on Feb. 22
  • Oklahoma State at BYU on March 2, with ESPN2 still an option

The two Arizona games are the clearest sign of BYU’s current television value. ESPN ranked Arizona No. 4 and BYU No. 20 in its preseason list. The return game in Provo gets the league’s Big Monday window. The network is betting that the first meeting will create a reason to watch the second.

BYU still has to make that bet look smart. National assignments are made before the season can sort contenders from good branding. The No. 20 roster analysis explains why Rob Wright III gives the Cougars a credible floor while the new frontcourt determines how high they can climb.

January asks a lot from fans and the roster

The first four conference games arrive in 11 days and cover four different start windows.

BYU opens at Arizona State at 8 p.m. on Jan. 2. Four nights later, Cincinnati tips at 8:30 in Provo. Kansas arrives for an 11 a.m. Saturday game, then BYU plays at Arizona at 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

That is not one routine repeated four times. It is a body-clock test:

GameLocal rhythm problem
at Arizona State, 8 p.m. MTLate league opener after the nonconference schedule
Cincinnati, 8:30 p.m. MTLatest home start on the published slate
Kansas, 11 a.m. MTMorning turnaround after a late Wednesday game
at Arizona, 9 p.m. MTLatest tip, with a likely finish near 11 p.m. Mountain

The hard turn is Cincinnati to Kansas. An 8:30 Wednesday game can run beyond 10:30 before media, treatment and the trip home. Kansas then asks BYU to be ready for an 11 a.m. Saturday tip. There are two full days between games, so this is not an NBA-style back-to-back. It is still a sharp reset from late-night energy to morning precision.

For the players, that puts value on habits that travel between windows: defensive communication, rebounding assignments and getting into the first action without spending eight minutes waking up. For fans, it means the Kansas game should feel less like an ordinary Saturday night event and more like a brunch appointment with a blue shirt.

The Utah split gives each rivalry game a different shape

The two Utah games share a rivalry and little else on the clock.

Utah visits Provo at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16 on TNT. The return game starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 on ESPN2 in Salt Lake City.

The Provo game has the later home window and follows a Tuesday night trip to Arizona. The Salt Lake City game follows a Tuesday home game against Baylor and requires almost no travel. BYU gets more recovery before the second meeting, while Utah gets the home floor.

That difference matters because rivalry games tend to be discussed as emotional events, as though energy appears on command. The schedule says something more practical. In the first meeting, BYU must recover from the Arizona trip and then hold attention through an 8 p.m. start. In the second, the Cougars have a normal three-day runway and a short bus ride.

The full schedule also shows what comes next. BYU gets a week after the game at Utah before Kansas State visits Provo. If the rivalry drains the tank, the calendar offers a place to refill it.

February is easier to watch and harder to survive

The February TV windows become friendlier just as the basketball gets heavier.

BYU has noon home games against TCU and a noon road game at Houston. Kansas State tips at 1:30 p.m. in Provo. Even the 10 a.m. Mountain start at UCF is manageable for viewers, though less friendly to a team playing across two time zones.

The larger issue is opponent order. BYU goes from Baylor to Utah, waits a week, then plays Kansas State, Colorado, TCU, Arizona and UCF in 15 days. The Arizona home game sits on Big Monday, two days after TCU. Five days later, BYU tips at UCF at what will be noon local time and 10 a.m. back home.

That TCU-Arizona turn may be the most important compressed segment on the slate. A Saturday noon game gives BYU more same-day recovery than a night tip would, but Monday still arrives quickly. Kevin Young cannot spend Sunday rebuilding the whole plan. The lineups and late-clock rules have to be stable enough to carry over.

This is where roster depth stops being a preseason talking point. Wright can organize the offense, but he should not have to play every hard minute on Saturday to make Monday possible. Collin Chandler’s secondary creation, Bruce Branch III’s wing defense and whichever frontcourt combination wins the job will determine whether BYU has two credible games in it over roughly 54 hours.

Five services means fans should check the game, not assume the channel

A national schedule is easier to find but not necessarily simpler to buy.

BYU’s designated games are spread across ESPN networks, FOX/FS1, TNT, CBS Sports Network and Peacock. ESPN+ carries games that were not selected, including much of the early home schedule. A subscription that covers one weekend may not cover the next.

The clean habit is to check the individual game on BYU’s official schedule before tipoff. Network designations can narrow from ESPN/ESPN2 or FOX/FS1, and direct streaming links often arrive closer to the game. Do not assume that an ESPN-branded game is on ESPN+ or that Peacock access includes USA Network. They are separate routes.

The known nonconference examples show the spread:

  • Ohio State is on FS1.
  • Northwestern is on Peacock.
  • Cal State Fullerton is on CBS Sports Network.
  • San Diego State is on USA Network, according to BYU’s current schedule page.
  • The Nov. 23 Maui opener against Washington is on ESPN2.

That is five different destinations before league play even settles into its normal rhythm.

What the TV map says about BYU

The Big 12 and its television partners did not hide BYU. They gave the Cougars 17 linear league games, three confirmed ESPN windows plus one ESPN-or-ESPN2 assignment, one confirmed FOX game plus one FOX-or-FS1 window, a TNT rivalry game and a Big Monday home game against Arizona.

That is national inventory. It is also a schedule built for television before it is built for sleep.

The Cougars will play a Wednesday home game at 8:30, a Tuesday road game at 9 and a Saturday home rivalry game at 8. They will turn from TCU on Saturday to Arizona on Monday. Then they will fly east for a 10 a.m. Mountain tip at UCF. Those windows are manageable. They are not free.

For fans, the answer is a calendar and a channel check. For BYU, the answer has to be a roster that can preserve its rules when the clock changes.

The television schedule gives BYU the audience it wanted. Now the Cougars have to stay worth staying up for.
