BYU is No. 2 in the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since its 1984 national championship season. That is the headline. The useful part sits one line deeper in the voting totals.
Miami leads BYU by 22 points. BYU leads Ohio State by 26.
The entire top three fits inside a 48-point corridor in a poll that gives 25 points for a first-place vote, 24 for second and 23 for third. BYU’s six-place jump is deserved recognition for beating Notre Dame 28-24. It is also much less comfortable than the large numeral suggests.
The Cougars received 20 first-place votes and 1,675 points. Miami received 40 first-place votes and 1,697 points. Ohio State received nine first-place votes and 1,649 points. A handful of voters changing the order could rearrange all three teams next Sunday.
So enjoy No. 2. BYU has spent too many decades asking the sport to notice it to pretend this does not matter. Just do not confuse attention with protection.
The top three are separated by one bad Saturday
The AP ballot gave BYU a historic position without giving it a meaningful cushion.
| AP team | Record | First-place votes | Poll points | Gap from BYU |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Miami | 6-0 | 40 | 1,697 | 22 ahead |
| BYU | 6-0 | 20 | 1,675 | Baseline |
| Ohio State | 6-1 | 9 | 1,649 | 26 behind |
BYU did not sneak into second because one voter got cute. Twenty voters placed the Cougars first. That is a serious national endorsement after a 6-0 start and a win over the team that occupied No. 2 one day earlier.
The same ballot also says the order is unsettled. Miami has twice BYU’s first-place support but only a 22-point lead. Ohio State has fewer than half of BYU’s first-place votes but sits 26 points back. Voters agree that these are three of the best teams right now. They do not agree nearly as strongly about the exact order.
That distinction matters after a weekend in which five of the previous top seven lost. The AP reported that every position in the Top 25 changed. BYU climbed six places because it supplied the best win among the survivors while Georgia, Notre Dame, Indiana, Alabama and Texas all lost.
Chaos opened the elevator. BYU still had to beat Notre Dame to step inside it.
Our Notre Dame recap explains why the win travels: BYU answered a late Bear Bachmeier interception with a defensive three-and-out, then drove 74 yards for the deciding touchdown. The Cougars went 4-for-4 in the red zone and held Notre Dame to six points after three BYU turnovers.
That is a stronger argument than merely remaining unbeaten while other teams fell. BYU paired survival with a direct win over an elite opponent.
The coaches supplied the needed disagreement
The US LBM Coaches Poll placed BYU third, behind Miami and Ohio State.
That is not an insult, and it is not evidence that one poll is correct while the other is broken. It is a useful check against reading No. 2 as settled national consensus.
| Poll | BYU rank | BYU first-place votes | BYU points |
|---|---|---|---|
| AP Top 25 | No. 2 | 20 | 1,675 |
| AFCA Coaches Poll | No. 3 | 10 | 1,698 |
In the coaches poll, Miami collected 1,791 points, Ohio State 1,725 and BYU 1,698. That puts the Cougars 27 points behind Ohio State instead of 26 ahead.
The two polls therefore agree on the broad conclusion and disagree on the narrow one. BYU belongs in the top three after six games. Whether the Cougars belong immediately above or below Ohio State depends on how a voter weighs an unbeaten record, BYU’s Notre Dame win and Ohio State’s own résumé.
That is a healthier reading than hunting for disrespect in every third-place ballot. BYU’s national case no longer depends on convincing people it belongs in the room. The argument has moved to where the Cougars should sit once they are there.
There is another boundary worth keeping clean: the AP poll is not the College Football Playoff ranking. The selection committee has not issued its first 2026 ranking. AP voters can describe the national race and influence the conversation, but they do not assign playoff seeds.
No. 2 is a receipt for the first half of the season. It is not a playoff reservation.
BYU now owns two current Top 25 wins
Notre Dame fell to No. 4 after losing in Provo. Arizona entered the poll at No. 25 during its open week after four consecutive double-digit wins.
That gives BYU two victories over teams in the current AP Top 25:
- No. 4 Notre Dame: 28-24 at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
- No. 25 Arizona: 28-17 at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
Current rankings are not permanent résumé labels. Arizona could leave the poll. Notre Dame could move. BYU’s opponents will keep changing the value of those wins without the Cougars taking another snap.
Still, this week’s snapshot answers one fair concern about an unbeaten team. BYU has not built 6-0 only against teams outside the national conversation. The Cougars beat the current No. 4 team and another ranked opponent, while their 3-0 Big 12 record includes wins over Arizona, TCU and Iowa State.
The Notre Dame result also repaired the weakest part of BYU’s previous three wins. Against TCU and Iowa State, the offense left points on the field and asked the defense to protect modest margins. Against Notre Dame, BYU finished all four red-zone trips with touchdowns. Bachmeier threw a damaging fourth-quarter interception, then returned to lead the winning drive.
That response does not erase the turnover. It gives poll voters a reason to trust the team after it.
The Big 12 path is more crowded than the ranking suggests
BYU leads the conference’s national profile, but it does not stand alone.
The AP ranked five Big 12 teams: BYU at No. 2, Texas Tech at No. 8, Utah at No. 10, Houston at No. 14 and Arizona at No. 25. The league has three top-10 teams and five ranked teams, according to BYU’s official poll release.
That is good for BYU’s résumé and bad for any fantasy that the conference race will now politely clear a lane.
The Cougars still have to visit No. 10 Utah on Nov. 7. Texas Tech and Houston are absent from BYU’s regular-season schedule, which means conference standings can move through games BYU does not control. A high AP ranking cannot break a Big 12 tie or win a trip to Arlington.
BYU’s own remaining sequence is UCF away, Arizona State at home, Utah away, Baylor at home, Kansas away and Cincinnati at home. The football schedule keeps the full path in one place.
There are no poll points available on those Saturdays. There are only conference wins and losses.
That is why No. 2 changes the pressure more than it changes the assignment. Before Notre Dame, BYU could chase a signature result. After Notre Dame, every opponent can chase one against BYU.
UCF is exactly the wrong game for a victory lap
BYU’s next game is Saturday, Oct. 24 at UCF. The official schedule still lists the kickoff and television assignment as TBA, so there is no honest reason to invent either one before the conference and networks announce them.
The Knights are 3-3 and had an open week after consecutive road losses to ranked Houston and Oklahoma State. That profile lacks Notre Dame’s shine. It also gives UCF two weeks to prepare for a home game against the new No. 2 team.
UCF scored touchdowns on its first two possessions at Oklahoma State and went to halftime tied 21-21 before losing 42-28. Quarterback Keyone Jenkins threw four touchdown passes in the loss. The Knights also led Houston 17-0 before allowing 27 unanswered points one week earlier.
Those games describe a team that has been dangerous early and unreliable late. BYU cannot treat the second half of that sentence as permission to ignore the first.
The Orlando trip also changes the environment. BYU’s two current ranked wins came in Provo. The Cougars have won at Colorado State and TCU, but neither road game carried a No. 2 beside BYU’s name. UCF gets the crowd, the preparation edge and the clean psychological pitch: spoil the season that became national news one week earlier.
BYU’s response should be boring.
Protect the ball better than it did against Notre Dame. Make UCF drive the field instead of gifting short possessions. Stay patient if the Knights score early. Finish red-zone trips. Let the ranking remain a television graphic rather than a play-call.
The permanent UCF game center will carry the official kickoff, broadcast, availability and live-to-final updates when those facts are published.
No. 2 is a mandate, not shelter
BYU fans do not need to downplay this. The program had not been ranked this high since the 1984 championship season. It received 20 first-place votes. It replaced Notre Dame at No. 2 by beating Notre Dame on the field.
That is clean, satisfying work.
It also created a new standard overnight. A close win at UCF will be discussed differently than a close win would have been when BYU sat eighth. A turnover will become evidence in a national argument. Every remaining opponent will be introduced as the team trying to knock off No. 2.
The poll’s 48-point top-three corridor makes the situation plain. BYU is close enough to Miami to reach No. 1 if results open the door. It is close enough to Ohio State to fall to No. 3 after an ordinary week. The coaches have already placed the Cougars there.
Nothing about that is unfair. This is what BYU spent decades asking for: national results judged on a national scale.
The Cougars earned the large number beside their name. Now they have to carry it through Orlando without letting it into the huddle.
