A national-name opponent in LaVell Edwards Stadium does not need much help becoming the loudest date on the schedule. The interesting part is that the public search trail is warming up already. The July 19 Google News radar surfaced a FOX Sports live-score/boxscore listing for Notre Dame at BYU on October 17, 2026, which is exactly the kind of breadcrumb fans start clicking months before kickoff.
So this is the file worth parking now: what is verified, what is still not, and what BYU has to make true before that Saturday stops being a brand-name poster and starts being a football game.
What is actually locked in
BYU’s official schedule data lists Notre Dame at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday, October 17, 2026, with kickoff set for 12:00 p.m. Mountain time. That is 2:00 p.m. Eastern for the Irish side of the internet.
The game is listed as a home date for BYU and a nonconference game. It lands after BYU’s October 9 home game against Iowa State and before the October 24 trip to UCF. That matters. This is not a stand-alone bowl-feeling week with nothing around it. It is jammed into the part of the season where BYU’s Big 12 legs will already be tested.
The TV assignment is the one I would not overstate yet. The radar item came through a FOX Sports boxscore/live-score listing, but BYU Sport Nuts is not treating that as the final broadcast notice until BYU, the league, or the network puts the game details in normal schedule language. For now, the clean read is simple: date, venue, opponent, and kickoff time are enough to build around. Channel and streaming details stay on watch.
That is boring. It is also how you avoid making fans chase a bad listing in October.
Why this date is bigger than the name
Notre Dame brings the helmet. BYU brings the setting.
That combination is the whole sell. BYU already has Big 12 home games with Arizona, Iowa State, Arizona State, Baylor, and Cincinnati on the 2026 schedule. Those are league games with standings attached. Notre Dame is different. It is the national-brand stress test that tells casual fans whether BYU’s Big 12 respect has hardened into something broader.
The Cougars do not get credit for hosting Notre Dame. They get credit if the game feels uncomfortable for Notre Dame by the second quarter.
That means the basics cannot wobble. BYU needs the offensive line to be grown by then, the quarterback room to be settled, and the pass rush to make the Irish earn third downs instead of sightseeing through Provo. A noon kick will not have the late-night LaVell weirdness cranked all the way up, so the football has to provide more of the bite.
The roster lens from July
The current BYU football roster gives the Notre Dame game a clearer shape than the average offseason hype piece.
BYU lists 116 players in the official-data roster file, including 20 offensive linemen, 14 wide receivers, 11 defensive ends, 10 tight ends, and 5 quarterbacks. That is not trivia. That is the menu Kalani Sitake and the staff have to turn into a playable team by October.
The quarterback room is the most obvious pressure point. The roster lists Bear Bachmeier, Treyson Bourguet, Enoch Watson, Max Barker, and Owen Geilman. Against Notre Dame, being “deep” only matters if the offense has two or three answers that actually scare coverage.
The defensive front might be the cleaner Notre Dame test. BYU lists 11 defensive ends and 9 defensive tackles. Bodie Schoonover is already the subject of fall-camp countdown chatter, and this is the kind of game where an older edge player can change the temperature of a drive. Notre Dame games tend to punish soft edges and cute tackling angles. BYU will need weight, discipline, and at least a little nastiness.
The schedule trap around it
The Notre Dame name will pull the eyes, but the placement is sneaky.
BYU has TCU on the road October 3, Iowa State at home October 9, Notre Dame at home October 17, and UCF on the road October 24. That is four straight weeks of very different problems: a road Big 12 test, a short-turnaround home league game, a national nonconference spotlight, then a long trip to Orlando.
If BYU is healthy and organized, that stretch can make the season feel real. If the Cougars are nicked up and still guessing at roles, it can eat a month.
That is why this game should not be treated like a souvenir. It is not just Notre Dame coming to Provo. It is Notre Dame arriving in the middle of a schedule segment that will already be asking BYU hard questions.

The better July takeaway is not “Notre Dame is coming.” Everyone can read a schedule.
The better takeaway is that BYU has about three months to make this look like a top-half Big 12 program hosting a national heavyweight, not a nice fanbase renting a big Saturday. The roster has enough older pieces to make that possible. The schedule has enough teeth to make it hard.
That is the fun part, and the part that should make Cougar fans a little itchy already.
