No. 24 BYU volleyball opens its real schedule Friday against Florida State, but fans looking for a video stream will find a split weekend in Fort Myers. Friday’s opener has live stats listed and no video link on the three official schedules. Saturday’s match against host Florida Gulf Coast is on ESPN+.
That distinction is easy to miss because both matches belong to the FGCU Invitational at Alico Arena. The first serve against Florida State is Friday, Aug. 28, at noon Mountain. BYU faces FGCU about 25 hours later, Saturday at 3 p.m. Mountain.
Here is the useful part: one live-stat link covers the opener, while the host’s schedule supplies a direct ESPN+ event for Saturday. Bookmark both before the weekend starts.

Florida State lists Friday’s match at 2 p.m. in Fort Myers, which is noon in Utah. FGCU lists Saturday’s match at 5 p.m. Eastern, or 3 p.m. Mountain. Those independent listings agree with BYU’s schedule.
The lack of a Friday video link is not a guess about television rights. It is simply what the official schedules show at publication. BYU and the host both attach ESPN+ to Saturday’s match and omit it from Friday’s neutral-site opener. If an official stream appears later, use the team schedule as the source of truth.
Friday is the lineup receipt BYU did not need to show Utah Tech
BYU swept Utah Tech 25-11, 25-17, 25-20 in Saturday’s exhibition. The Cougars hit .305, held the Trailblazers to .121, won the kill count 42-27 and finished with 51 digs and eight blocks.
Those are tidy numbers. They did not settle the most interesting opening-week question.
Alex Bower recorded 17 assists and 10 digs. Kaylie Kofe added 13 assists. BYU changed lineups, and the official recap did not publish a rotation-by-rotation participation log. That makes Friday the first match that counts toward the record and the first chance to see how Rob Neilson divides meaningful setting work when a dropped set cannot be waved away as exhibition tinkering.
The question is not limited to whether Bower or Kofe starts. Watch how long each setter stays on the floor, which hitters join her and whether BYU uses the same structure after a rough run. Our Blue-White scrimmage analysis noted that Bower and Kofe each had 35 assists. The Utah Tech match kept both involved. Friday should add a better sample.
Claire Little Chambers enters the weekend with the cleanest external-match attacking line. She led BYU with 10 kills against Utah Tech. Sophia Callahan had eight, Elli Mortensen had seven and freshman Brooke Hardy turned nine attacks into five kills with one error.
That spread is encouraging without proving how Neilson will handle a close set. Against Florida State, the useful clue will be where the ball goes after an opponent strings together two or three points. A balanced box score can come from deliberate depth. It can also come from an exhibition rotation that will disappear when the score tightens.
Saturday adds a specific front-row test
FGCU is more than the host with the available stream. Its own season preview identifies a veteran group that gives BYU a clear blocking and transition assignment.
Outside hitter Julija Grubisic Cabo returns after recording 359 kills, 292 digs and 26 aces across 28 matches in 2025. Middle blocker Abby Toeniskoetter hit .364 with 172 kills. Erica Muhizi produced 127 kills on .320 hitting and 108 total blocks during an ASUN All-Freshman season.

BYU’s eight exhibition blocks are relevant here, but the raw total is less important than the next touch. A block that slows the ball and lets Lulu Uluave or Bower control it can turn into a clean swing. A touch that flies out of system gives FGCU another chance.
The quick turnaround also makes Kate Prior’s two-position availability useful. Prior is listed at middle blocker and opposite after sitting out last season. She recorded two kills and two digs in the exhibition, according to the Daily Herald. That is not a major production claim. It is an experienced option when BYU has to play a second opponent in roughly 25 hours.
What one weekend can answer
Two matches will not settle BYU’s season. They can clear up three August questions.
First, the setter split should become less theoretical. Bower and Kofe have both supplied public assist totals, but regular-season score pressure will show whether Neilson trusts one for longer stretches or keeps both plans active.
Second, the outside-hitter order should sharpen. Little Chambers and Callahan led the exhibition, Mortensen added seven kills, and Hardy carried her productive scrimmage into an external match. Florida State and FGCU can force BYU to reveal which combination it uses when passing breaks down.
Third, Saturday should test whether the Cougars’ block can create transition offense against experienced middles. FGCU returns real efficiency and blocking production. That makes the host match a better structural test than its conference label might suggest.
There is also a fan lesson in the schedule itself. Friday is a live-stats afternoon. Saturday is the match to put on the screen. BYU’s regular season starts in two different viewing lanes, and now neither one should be hard to find.
