One match at South Field will carry two scoreboards. BYU needs help from Kansas to turn a win into a Big 12 title. Arizona State needs help from Cincinnati to turn a win into a tournament berth.

No. 13 BYU hosts Arizona State at 7 p.m. Mountain Standard Time on Thursday, Nov. 5, at South Field in Provo. ESPN+ will stream the regular-season finale, StatBroadcast has the official live numbers, and BYU’s stable schedule ID is 25216.

BYU enters 11-3-3 overall and 7-1-2 in the Big 12 after consecutive 3-0 and 3-1 wins. Arizona State is 9-6-3 and 4-5-1 after beating Arizona 1-0. The Cougars can still earn at least a share of their first Big 12 regular-season title. The Sun Devils are one point outside the eight-team conference tournament.

That should remove most of the usual finale caution. A draw cannot complete either team’s stated objective.

BYU’s event record lists 2026-11-06 at 02:00 UTC, which converts to 7 p.m. MST Thursday in Provo. The official BYU preview and schedule publish the same start, South Field venue, ESPN+ route and live-stat link. Arizona State’s schedule and preview independently confirm 7 p.m. MST and ESPN+.

Arizona State’s preview lists Greg Wrubell on play-by-play, Carla Swensen-Haslam as analyst and Cameron Clark on the sideline. Neither school has published a radio option. If the direct ESPN player moves or redirects by device, use the permanent BYU schedule instead of an unofficial stream directory.

Seven BYU seniors will be honored before the match, according to the official preview. Fans watching from home should leave room before kickoff rather than treating 7 p.m. as the start of the ceremony.

The title math is tight, but it is not complicated

Texas Tech leads the Big 12 with 25 points. BYU has 23. The Red Raiders finish at Kansas while the Cougars face Arizona State.

BYU’s official clinching scenarios are exact:

  • If Texas Tech wins, Texas Tech takes the title outright.
  • If Texas Tech draws and BYU wins, the teams share the title.
  • If Texas Tech loses and BYU wins, BYU takes the title outright.

A BYU draw cannot catch Texas Tech, even if the Red Raiders lose, because the Cougars would finish on 24 points. A win is the first requirement. Kansas supplies the rest of the answer.

That matters tactically. BYU cannot manage the Arizona State match as if protecting second place is the only job. At some point, especially if the match stays level, the Cougars will have to keep enough bodies around the box to create another chance without handing the Sun Devils a clean counter.

The outside score should not control every early pass. It should shape the late decisions. If Texas Tech is dropping points and BYU is tied after 70 minutes, conservative possession has a real cost. If Kansas is losing, BYU still needs to finish its own work before worrying about the seed attached to it.

Arizona State has even less use for a draw

The Sun Devils sit ninth with 13 points, one behind West Virginia. The top eight reach the Big 12 Tournament.

Arizona State’s official scenario requires a win at BYU plus a West Virginia loss or draw against Cincinnati. The Sun Devils cannot pass West Virginia with a draw in Provo. Their route begins with three points on a field where BYU is 8-0-1 this season.

That pressure can make Arizona State dangerous before it makes the Sun Devils reckless. They are not arriving with a five-match losing streak and a suitcase full of hope. They just beat Arizona 1-0 after two weather delays, with Kierra Blundell scoring in the 66th minute. Arizona State is 3-2 away from home this season, according to the Big 12 standings.

The Sun Devils know this matchup can turn. Last season, Arizona State beat then-No. 10 BYU 2-1 in Tempe. Addison Baltodano scored the winner in the 50th minute, and she is the only active Sun Devil with a goal against BYU.

BYU leads the series 4-2, but the recent result keeps this from feeling like a ceremonial senior night. Arizona State is trying to win consecutive meetings for the first time in the eight-match series. It is also seeking its first win in Provo since 2004.

BYU’s six-goal run has come from the next pass

The Cougars scored three at Iowa State and three against Utah. The total is useful. The 10 assists across those two matches say more about why the attack has opened.

Against Utah, Mika Krommenhoek scored after 1:04, BYU’s fastest goal of the season. Mia Goettsche added a second-half brace. Sydney Snow recorded the first two-assist match of her BYU career, and Kyleigh Hastings added her first career assist.

The goals did not come from one player dribbling through the same lane three times. Snow’s service, Hastings’ back-post touch and Goettsche’s movement forced Utah to defend the next connection. BYU’s 3-1 rivalry win became comfortable because the ball kept moving after the first opening appeared.

Arizona State has to decide how aggressively to stop that connection. If the Sun Devils step toward Krommenhoek early, space can open behind the first defender. If they protect the six-yard box too soon, Snow or another wide player may have room to serve without pressure. If they keep everyone deep, BYU can recycle the ball and make the block shift again.

The useful viewing cue is not simply BYU’s shot count. Watch the number of Arizona State defenders who have to turn toward their own goal. A shot from 25 yards with the entire back line set is activity. A low cross that makes a center back sprint toward the near post while a second runner arrives behind her is a problem.

Blundell’s winner gives BYU a warning about the middle hour

Arizona State’s 1-0 win over Arizona did not arrive in the opening rush. Blundell scored in the 66th minute after the match had absorbed two weather delays.

That is a different test from the one BYU solved against Utah. The Cougars scored almost immediately, then had room to play from ahead. Thursday may ask them to stay organized through a scoreless stretch while the title and tournament stakes get louder.

BYU should expect Arizona State to keep a counter available. A team that needs a win cannot spend all 90 minutes defending its box, but it also cannot open both fullback lanes at once against a BYU attack that has found six goals in two matches.

Amy Medley is part of that balance. Arizona State credits the freshman defender with six assists, the most by a freshman defender in one season in program history. Her next assist would give her the second-highest freshman total in Arizona State history at any position. BYU cannot read every Sun Devil defender’s first step as retreat. Medley can turn a recovery into service before the Cougars reset.

The battle after a BYU turnover should be revealing. If BYU’s nearest midfielder stops the first pass, Arizona State may have to build against a set defense. If the Sun Devils find Medley or Baltodano facing forward, South Field can become long in a hurry.

Three checkpoints should tell the story

The first Arizona State outlet

BYU wants repeat attacks, especially at home. The danger is treating every cleared corner as another free possession. Arizona State needs to travel quickly enough to make BYU keep honest numbers behind the ball. One clean outlet can change how aggressively the Cougars send a fullback into the next wave.

Who receives Snow’s service

Snow’s two assists against Utah came from finding the next runner, not from chasing a personal shot total. Arizona State must protect Goettsche after her brace, but overcommitting to her can leave Hastings, Krommenhoek or a late midfielder free. Watch who attacks the back post when the first blue shirt pulls the center backs toward the ball.

The decisions after 70 minutes

A level match helps neither side reach its main goal. That does not guarantee chaos, but it should force choices. BYU may send another runner beyond the ball. Arizona State may release a defender earlier or leave two attackers higher. The team that adds urgency without breaking its rest defense will have the cleaner final 20 minutes.

What comes next

The top eight Big 12 teams advance to the conference tournament at Texas Health Mansfield Stadium in Mansfield, Texas. Quarterfinals begin Monday, Nov. 9, followed by semifinals Wednesday and the championship Saturday, Nov. 14. BYU has qualified; Arizona State is still trying to enter the field.

BYU’s official schedule keeps the postseason opponent and time as TBA until the bracket settles. The women’s soccer hub keeps the roster and season pages together, while the results archive will carry Thursday’s final after BYU publishes it. Our Utah watch guide and three-route recap show how the Cougars reached the finale with the title still available.

BYU needs a win and a Kansas assist. Arizona State needs a win and a Cincinnati assist. Before either team can borrow help, it has to create its own three points at South Field.
