The Cougars visit Utah State at 7:30 p.m. Mountain on Thursday, Sept. 10. The match will stream free on the Pac-12 YouTube channel from Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field in Logan. BYU enters 4-1-1 after a 2-1 win over Colorado State and a 1-1 draw with Oklahoma. Utah State is 4-2-1.
The rankings favor BYU. The recent history warns against treating Logan like a ceremonial stop before Big 12 play. Utah State beat then-No. 1 BYU 1-0 on this field in 2023, and the teams needed an 11-round penalty shootout to settle their 2025 NCAA Tournament meeting.

Utah State’s 14 goals need one correction
Utah State’s cumulative line looks aggressive: 14 goals, 99 shots and 52 shots on goal through seven matches. That is a 52.5 percent shot-on-goal rate, with Ellie Hendrix and Samantha Sellers tied for the team lead at three goals each.
Eight of those 14 goals came in one match against Utah Tech. Seven Aggies scored in the 8-1 win. Remove that afternoon, and Utah State has six goals across its other six matches.
That does not make the Aggies harmless. It makes their profile easier to read. Utah State has beaten Portland, Utah Valley and Utah by a combined 4-0. Ivy Nystrom has started five matches in goal, allowed three goals in 439 minutes and recorded three shutouts. The Aggies can win without turning a match into the Utah Tech track meet.
Their most recent loss also carried a warning for BYU. Utah State fell 2-0 at No. 24 Colorado but finished with a 16-15 shot advantage and put seven attempts on frame. A shutout loss did not mean the Aggies spent the day trapped in their own half.
BYU should expect a host that can create enough volume to make one defensive mistake expensive.
BYU’s shot volume has outrun its precision
BYU produced 34 shots across the Colorado State and Oklahoma matches. Nine reached the target, a 26.5 percent rate.
Those two games still delivered three goals and a 1-0-1 return. The route was messy. Against Colorado State, BYU needed second-half goals from substitutes Mattyn Summers-Oviatt and Emma Hamberlin after the Rams had the better of the opening half. Against Oklahoma, the Cougars took 16 corners but put four shots on goal and waited until Sophie Sivulich’s equalizer in the 84th minute.
Our Colorado State analysis showed how the bench changed that match. The Oklahoma result file separated territorial pressure from clean finishing. Logan asks whether BYU can join those two lessons sooner.
Utah State has allowed 62 shots and 25 on goal. Opponents have needed 38 saves against the Aggies, while Utah State’s keepers have made 18. The basic picture is a team that permits attempts but often forces the opposing goalkeeper to do more work than its own.
BYU cannot settle for another large shot total with most of the danger missing the frame. A free header over the bar still counts as a shot. So does a hopeful attempt through traffic. Neither forces Nystrom to solve anything.
The first goal changes the whole test
BYU has already shown it can repair a match. It came from behind against Colorado State and rescued the Oklahoma draw late. That is useful evidence, especially for a team mixing younger attackers into Jennifer Rockwood’s final season.
It would be better not to need the repair.
Utah State’s wins over Portland, Utah Valley and Utah were all shutouts. Hendrix has supplied three game-winning goals in seven appearances. If the Aggies score first, they can protect space and make BYU turn possession into precise entries instead of repeated restarts and distant attempts.
BYU’s best answer is probably not a frantic opening 15 minutes. It is a cleaner one. Hamberlin has scored three times across the USC and Colorado State wins. Summers-Oviatt gave BYU a direct second-half runner against the Rams. Sivulich has now provided a late goal against Oklahoma. Those are three different attacking answers, and all three can matter without changing the starting lineup.
The useful checkpoint is where the first five BYU shots go. If several force saves or create rebounds, the Cougars are finding the dangerous part of Utah State’s shape. If the count climbs while Nystrom stays clean, the same finishing problem from Oklahoma has followed them north.
This is a real nonconference finale
BYU opens Big 12 play at home against TCU on Sept. 17. Utah State begins its first Pac-12 schedule later in the month. Thursday is the last chance for both teams to sharpen a problem before conference results take over the résumé.
The series belongs to BYU at 16-3-2, according to the official BYU preview. The last two meetings carry more weight than the full count. BYU won the 2025 regular-season match 2-0, then tied Utah State 1-1 in the NCAA first round before advancing 7-6 in the 11-round shootout. The Aggies’ 2023 win in Logan remains the most recent meeting on this field.
That is enough history to kill the idea of a routine tune-up. BYU has more attacking depth and the higher ranking. Utah State has home-field evidence, a goalkeeper with three shutouts and a shot profile that survived a 2-0 loss at Colorado.
Watch whether BYU turns its first wave of possession into shots Nystrom has to save. Another pile of corners and blocked attempts may keep the Cougars on the front foot. Cleaner finishing would send them into Big 12 play with something sturdier than territorial control.
