BYU and Utah Valley meet Tuesday night in Provo with more going on than a short bus ride and a familiar opponent. The Cougars just survived UCLA in five sets. The Wolverines just won consecutive five-set matches after starting 0-7.

The matchup to watch is right at the tape. Kelli Jo Burgess had 10 blocks in BYU’s win over UCLA. Utah Valley middle Brielle Rueckert answered one day later with 19 kills on .720 hitting against Radford. One side has to make its recent headline travel into a different kind of match.

There is one timing conflict worth knowing before Tuesday. BYU’s official event record gives a start of 2026-09-16 at 00:30 UTC, which converts to 6:30 p.m. MDT on Tuesday, Sept. 15. Utah Valley’s official schedule also says 6:30 p.m. Mountain. The closing note in BYU’s UCLA recap says 6 p.m., so that line appears to be the outlier. We are using the matching event record and opponent schedule, but fans should check the BYU schedule before leaving or signing in.
BYU’s schedule lists ESPN+ and StatBroadcast for this match. It does not list a radio broadcast. The ESPN+ destination may require a subscription and may not expose the individual match tile until closer to first serve.
BYU found a fifth-set answer against UCLA
BYU is 5-1 after beating UCLA 3-2 on Friday. The Cougars won the first set 25-15, lost the second 25-22, took the third 25-17, lost the fourth 25-20 and closed the fifth 15-10.
That order matters. BYU did not steadily wear UCLA down. It alternated between a clean offense and one that could barely get through a rotation. Across the first, third and fifth sets, the Cougars hit .330. Across the second and fourth, they hit .029 with 20 attack errors.
The decider was the repair. BYU hit .476 with 11 kills and one error. Kaylie Kofe’s ace broke a 6-6 tie, two UCLA attacks went long, and the Cougars protected the four-point gap from there. Elli Mortensen had three kills on four fifth-set swings, while Claire Little Chambers and Sophia Callahan supplied five more.

Little Chambers enters after reaching 1,000 career kills. Her 13-kill, 13-dig night against UCLA included 32 serve receptions, a fuller measure of her job than the milestone alone. Mortensen led BYU with 16 kills, and Callahan added 12.
Utah Valley can make those pins work. The Wolverines recorded 20 blocks against Kansas City, including 12 by Rueckert. If BYU’s first contact drifts off the net, its two-setter offense can become obvious in a hurry. That is where a favorable matchup on paper can start to feel cramped.
Utah Valley’s 2-7 record changed shape over 24 hours
Utah Valley lost its first seven matches. Then the Wolverines beat Kansas City in five Friday night and Radford in five Saturday morning.
The first win came through defense. UVU totaled 92 digs, fifth-most in program history, and a season-high 20 blocks against Kansas City. Rueckert set a career high with 12 blocks. Evalyn Medaris had 36 assists and 24 digs, while Lani Toutai added 20 digs.
The second win came with far more offense. Rueckert put down 19 kills on 25 attempts without an attack error, a .720 hitting percentage. Miley Thunstrom had 16 kills, Olivia Gloeckner 13 and Alyvia Watkins 10. Medaris delivered 57 assists and 18 digs, and Toutai raised her career high to 32 digs.

Those wins do not erase the 0-7 start. They do make it stale. Utah Valley arrives with evidence that it can win a fifth set in two different ways, first by controlling the net and then by feeding a hot middle.
The Radford finish is especially useful film for BYU. UVU led 12-10 in the fifth, lost a match point at 14-14, then went straight back to Rueckert and Gloeckner for consecutive kills. The Wolverines did not blink away from their best matchup after the set tightened.
BYU should expect the same choice if Rueckert gets early one-on-one swings Tuesday.
Burgess and Rueckert make the middle the first read
Burgess’ 10 block assists against UCLA were the most by a BYU player in a match since 2024, according to BYU Athletics. She also had seven kills with two errors on 15 swings. Her block gave BYU time to survive the two sets when its attack disappeared.
Rueckert’s weekend asks a slightly different question. Against Kansas City, she affected the match as a blocker. Against Radford, she became the cleanest attacker on the floor. That range means BYU cannot treat her as a single-purpose middle who disappears after the first tempo is taken away.
The setter matchup matters with it. BYU continues to divide the offense between Alex Bower and Kofe. They combined for 52 assists against UCLA. UVU leaned heavily on Medaris against Radford, where she finished one assist short of her career high.
If BYU serves Utah Valley away from Medaris, Burgess can read a smaller menu. If UVU passes cleanly, Rueckert and Watkins can hold BYU’s middle blockers long enough to free Gloeckner or Thunstrom on the edges.
The Cougars should have the deeper collection of proven attackers. Depth only helps if the pass lets both setters use it.
The series belongs to BYU, but last year had tight sets
Utah Valley’s official history page lists BYU at 20-0 in the Division I series. The Cougars won 3-1 in Orem last season, but the set scores were 25-19, 23-25, 25-21 and 26-24. Little Chambers had 25 kills for BYU. Utah Valley produced 17 blocks and led 15-13 in the fourth before the Cougars recovered.
Several UVU pieces from that net battle remain involved, including Gloeckner and Watkins. The personnel around them has changed, and last year’s result does not award Tuesday’s first point. It does show why the series record can be true without every set being comfortable.
BYU’s cleaner route is to press that distinction early. Make Utah Valley side out against a formed block, keep Rueckert from scoring in transition and force a team that has already played four five-set matches to chase from behind.
For Utah Valley, the formula is familiar: extend rallies, make BYU’s outside hitters take extra swings and see whether the .029 version of the Cougar offense returns. Pittsburgh found it for two consecutive sets. UCLA found it in alternating sets. The Wolverines do not need to invent a new pressure point.
What comes next
Tuesday opens a three-match in-state week for both teams. BYU travels to Weber State on Thursday, then hosts Utah State on Saturday. Utah Valley visits Utah State on Thursday before returning to Orem for Weber State on Saturday.

For BYU, the useful goal is not merely avoiding an upset. The Cougars need to connect Friday’s fifth-set offense to the opening set Tuesday, then keep it there when Utah Valley’s block produces its first ugly rotation. The Wolverines have spent two straight matches proving they are comfortable when the night runs long.
